(4/9/16) What's OTN&W for April?

Archives

April 9th, 2016

Well, we all know that March got away from me, so now that it's been 2 months since my first What's On the Needles and Wheels post, I actually have lots of progress and new projects to share!

You may recall that I was working on two different cardigans - the Shepherdess Cardigan and the Top-Down Icelandic Sweater. It became necessary to put one on hold for awhile, and as I have been LOVING taking the Craftsy class for the Icelandic sweater with my dear friend, Tammy, I decided that the Shepherdess Cardigan would have to wait. My hands simply cannot take working with larger needles (pretty much anything over size 5s or 6s) for long periods of time, so right now I'm focusing on the Icelandic! Big shocker, right?  I chose the Icelandic sweater - made from Icelandic wool - I know you're all surprised by this decision!

Here are a couple of progress pictures of the Icelandic sweater:

As of this post, however, check out how close I am to being finished!!!

That's right - the body and one sleeve are finished, and I'm about 1/3 of the way finished with the second sleeve.  After this, the sweater gets a lovely bath (thanks to the wonderful teaching and information in Ragga Eiríksdóttir 's Craftsy class, the Top-Down Icelandic Sweater!)...and then...(cue 1930s horror movie music)...I STEEK! To be honest, I'm not as afraid of steeking as I was before watching the class and getting some awesome suggestions from Tammy (whose Icelandic sweater is a work of art!!), so at this point, I'm just SO EXCITED because this sweater will actually be finished and wearable when the cold weather comes back!

As far as other knitting/crocheting projects, one of my goals for 2016 is to make 100 hats for charity. Yesterday I finished #25, so I think I'm pretty much on track for achieving this goal - I tend to work in spurts on these, and as the crochet pattern I use works up so quickly (the Shanti Hat by Robyn Devine), I know that I can whip a bunch up in December if I do get behind! These hats are donated to Wool-Aid, Hats and More for Syrian Refugees, Arizona and Michigan homeless veterans through my amazing friend, Jen, and our local hospitals' family birth centers through my fiber group, the Wool Gatherers - so not only do I get to support various wonderful charities, but I get to work with all sizes of hats and different types of yarn! The homeless vets and baby hats for the local hospitals need to be made from washable yarns (superwash wool or acrylics), and Wool-Aid and the Syrian Refugees group require wool - and I am LOVING the fact that my handspun can be used for those wool hats! In fact, here is hat #25, for Syrian Refugees, out of some of my Tour de Fleece spinning from 2015:

And speaking of spinning (what a perfect segue!!), my wheels and I have been VERY busy of late! The Adventures in Fleece & Fiber event is going strong - I am absolutely THRILLED to see so many people participating and trying out new-to-them fibers! For my personal spinning, I've tried (and loved) Swaledale, Black Welsh Mountain, and Daisy's Hampshire/Suffolk roving, and crocheted blanket squares of each one for my Adventures in Fleece blanket - and OH MY HECK, I received the most beautiful gift ever from my awesome friend, Shanan - 2 ounces of Navajo Churro from a local-to-her farm! I can't wait to get that on the wheel!!!

And check out this Navajo Churro! The minute I opened the package, I ran for my copy of The Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook, by Carol Ekarius and Deborah Robson, to read all about it!

I also dove into my bags of roving and spun a couple of samples from Mikey and Panda Bear, and let me tell you - those sheep do NOT disappoint! I spun singles from both, and I am still somewhat stunned and amazed at how soft and beautiful they are after being washed - and yet still very strong! Icelandic wool truly is magical, and I am very much looking forward to spinning a great deal more of it!

Once I get some singles from Black Velvet spun, I will hold all three of them together and do a couple of duplicate stitch sheep on the sleeves of my Icelandic sweater, right above the cuffs...the singles are quite thin, so I think holding the strands together to make a 3-ply should work nicely to make fluffy sheep!

Well, that's about all I have OTN&W for now - but don't forget about the special events happening this month to celebrate our 1st Anniversary:
