(2/4/16) What's OTN&W?

Thanks to the awesome suggestion by one of my survey-takers, I'm going to start featuring What's OTN&W (On The Needles & Wheels) once a month, along with some suggestions for patterns that you can knit or crochet with your spun yarn from BFF Batts - I'd like to give you some ideas as to what you can make from your beautiful handspun!

I currently have several long-term projects OTN, which is kind of odd for me as I tend to be the instant-gratification kind of knitter...hats, blanket squares, etc. But this past year I became more comfortable with stranded colorwork, so I dove right into the deep end and started two colorwork sweaters...that's right...TWO! Now, neither sweater has a TON of colorwork, but it's enough to get me feeling even more confident in my Fair Isle abilities! The first is this Shepherdess Cardigan:
I am LOVING this sweater! It is from the Shepherdess Cardigan pattern by Julia Farwell-Clay, but as you can see I did my own modification - I added a band right above the bottom ribbing and included my 3-soon-to-be-4 sheep (from left to right - Daisy, Black Velvet, Panda Bear, and Mikey). I'm thinking about adding similar bands around each sleeve, but only having two sheep on each one. At any rate, I'm excited to get this finished up and wear it outside whilst tending my sheepies!

The second sweater is a Top-Down Icelandic Sweater from a Craftsy class taught by Ragnheiður Eiríksdóttir - I seriously cannot recommend this class enough! It is a fantastic introduction to stranded colorwork, knitting a sweater from the top down, and even STEEKING! Yes, I'm going to learn to steek this into a cardigan:
Besides the awesomeness of the sweater instructions, I am also thrilled to get to listen to Ragga talk about Iceland, Icelandic culture, Icelandic sheep, Lopi yarn, and even teach us how to count in Icelandic! It is a delightful class and I am so grateful to my sweet friend Tammy for telling me about it in the first place!

As far as what's OTW (On The Wheel), I currently have two spinning projects going - the first is some super fun Corriedale fiber from Supernatural Yarns - the colorway is "You're Just As Sane As I Am," a reference to Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series:
This first bobbin was spun with shorter color changes, but the second bobbin will have longer ones, which is known as Fractal Spinning (for more information about that, please check out this great article on Knitty!). I'm really excited to see how this turns out - should be VERY colorful! I'm calling the project Clown College Collette - as I've been spinning these colors, all I could think about were clowns...and this reference from an episode of Supernatural popped into my head!

My other spinning project is for a Victorian Valentines Spinspiration contest in the Fancy Kitty group on Ravelry - the idea is to choose one of the Valentines they provided in the group, then post 5 different pictures of your progress in choosing fiber to prep and spin based on your Valentine. I chose this lovely card:
And here is my fiber on my Fancy Kitty Kitten drum carder:
And a finished batt:
I am so excited to get this on the wheel - it contains Corriedale, BFL, bamboo, silk, angelina for sparkle, and Mikey's Icelandic for love!

WHEW! This has been a very long post, and I hope I haven't bored anyone to sleep! Now, before I sign off, let me give you a pattern suggestion for your handspun (or commercial yarn, of course) - if you're a BFFer, spinning those BFF Batts, I bet your spinning would look fabulous in a Waltz Through the Forest Cowl - oh my stars, this is a beauty! A free pattern on Ravelry, I say add this baby to your library and give it a try! If you do, be sure to come share it in the Blaine Fleece & Fiber group - we'd love to have you join us there!

And it just wouldn't be a Sheep and Fate blog post without some gratuitous sheepy pictures - thanks for reading, and hello from the Trio!
