(4/3/16) A Guest Blogger tells us All About Lambs

April 3rd, 2016

I'm pleased to welcome our guest blogger (and all-around awesome daughter), Elise, to Sauðr eða Urðr! Elise has been blogging on Tumblr for about two years, and recently she was working on a couple of posts having to do with Daisy's lambs and our sheep, so I invited her to share her observations and thoughts with my readers! This post is all about our visit to Lee's farm to meet Daisy and her beautiful twin girls - I hope you enjoy it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So we went out to see the lambs today, and I got to name the two little girls! I had thought I was only going to name one of them, but since my brother didn’t come with us, I got to name them both. So I named them Cupcake and Sprinkle!

Cupcake is the first-born, and smaller of the two. She also looked completely black.

Sprinkle was born second, and she's the larger one. She was also born back-feet first as Lee didn’t want to push her back in or re-position her. Sheep are supposed to be born facing forward, head above and between the front legs (nose and toes).

Cupcake didn't really mind being held, but Sprinkle was a lot less calm and called for her mom a few times.

Daisy had to keep a close eye on us, especially after we started picking up her babies. She was way more protective of this year's lambs. At least until I gave her and Shadow some bread.

Then she was completely alright with us hanging around. She had to lick my hand a couple times to make sure I wasn't holding out on her.

We also got to see Samson, who is huge (probably twice as big as Cupcake or Sprinkle)! He was very interested in everything that was going on. I wish we could have held him, too, but he's a very big lamb. I don't know if we could have easily held him!

Don’t worry about the pens they’re in, those are lambing jugs. The jugs are to help the ewes bond with their lambs, and they don’t stay in there for very long (I believe Lee keeps them in there for roughly two weeks). They all get to go outside (and usually stay outside during the day) once the lambs are a wee bit older. The weather is just super nasty right now, and these are very new babies (Cupcake and Sprinkle are only two days old!)

Thank you, Elise!  And thank you, Readers, for continuing to check in and see what Blaine Fleece & Fiber is up to!
